Prevent Knee Injuries - Sportsmetrics

sportsmetricsSome injuries suffered on the field simply cannot be avoided. This is the risk you take when you sign up to play. But for many, injuries involving the knee joint occur due to poor technique or lack of strength and conditioning. It should be your goal to take charge and do what you can to protect your knees because most of you have a long and exciting soccer career ahead of you. There are many injury prevention programs that can teach you the proper techniques to help avoid an ACL injury.

Sportsmetrics™ is the first training program scientifically proven to help athletes get stronger, jump higher, and reduce the risk of serious knee injuries. The program was designed by Dr. Frank Noyes, one of the most influential orthopaedic physicians in the world, and his research team at Cincinnati SportsMedicine Research and Education Foundation. It is a six-week jump training program that meets three times per week on alternating days. Each session is approximately one and a half hours and includes the following components:

  • Dynamic Warm-up: Prepares the body with functional based activities that use sport specific motions. It raises core body temperature, increases blood flow to the muscles and improves flexibility, balance and coordination.

  • Plyometrics/Jump Training: Plyometrics, the core of the Sportsmetrics™ program, are used to focus on correct jumping technique and are divided into three two week phases. Each phase has a different training focus and the exercises change accordingly. Plyometrics develop muscle control and strength that are critical for reducing the risk of knee injury and increasing jump height.
  • Speed and Agility Training: Emphasizes body alignment and form while performing sprinting and cutting movements. The goal of speed and agility training is to condition your body and increase skill level while teaching proper technique as well.
  • High Intensity Strength Training: With emphasis on body alignment and form, Sportsmetrics™ provides structured (yet adaptable) strength training guidance. This section focuses on development of core strength and improving overall muscular efficiency. This can be done with or without equipment or free weights.
  • Flexibility Training: Stretching is essential to achieve maximum muscle length, allowing muscles to work with power through complete range of motion. This is important for decreasing injury and post-training muscle soreness.

For ongoing benefits after the Sportsmetrics™ program, we teach Sportsmetrics™ WIPP (Warm-up for Injury Prevention and Performance.) WIPP is a specially designed warm-up that incorporates all of the above components of Sportsmetrics™. WIPP takes approximately 20 minutes and can be performed as a warm-up prior to practice and games.

Medically Oriented Gym

Come try out our Medically Oriented Gym. Physical therapists are medical experts in the area of musculoskeletal conditions as well as the instruction and administration of exercise as it relates to disease and dysfunction. The Medically Oriented Gym (MOG) is a new concept in fitness, bridging physical therapy and the fitness center environment. The MOG encompasses wellness and exercise, based upon one's individual goals, requirements and limitations in a medically supervised setting while integrating it with your healthcare.

What is a “MOG”

The vision of our MOG is to deliver a fitness service that will create a valuable and life altering experience. We hope to appeal to, attract and retain those that are intimidated and or require specialized attention in regards to their health and fitness needs. Many of these patients have no idea how to begin a fitness and exercise program. Our goal is to make their exercise programs individualized and very attainable. We want to capture the attention and confidence of the medical community so that they can confidentially refer the medically compromised patients that are in the greatest need of our professionally specialized exercise and fitness services.

Exercise is the backbone of health and wellness, and everyone deserves the opportunity to explore and maintain a program that will maximize their individual needs and fitness potential in consideration of their specific goals and limitations.

There are many reasons why patients don’t constantly maintain a regular fitness program:

  • Some have a hard time motivating themselves,
  • Some need a push
  • Some need a gym-like environment
  • Some have medical issues and limitations
  • Some are just not comfortable in a typically fast paced high impact fitness center.

We are offering those a different type of gym, a different type of experience.

I first read about the MOG about 3 years ago in a trade publication. Some clinics in the northeast were doing it. If you go to a fitness center now, there will be some employees there. You might even see a personal trainer helping someone. However, we discovered that the greatest frustration of fitness club members was the lack of supervision and specialized attention paid to the member by the staff of the club. We knew that if we gave our membership the same attention to detail in the MOG as we do our patients in the clinic, we would be providing a level of service unheard of in the fitness club industry. At the MOG we will have a licensed physical therapist or physical therapy assistant present every day to help and guide you through the workout. Yes, the vast majority of the time your workout will be self directed, but the therapist will be there to supervise and advance your program, give you a new challenge, make sure you’re exercising correctly, and answer questions.

Who benefits? Who is a candidate for the medically oriented gym?

  • Clients with cardiovascular issues, diabetics, those with balance issues, or arthritis; in short, those with a medical condition.
  • Clients wishing to lose weight (including children).
  • Clients who have had weight-loss surgery such as a Lap-Band or Gastric-Bypass procedure.
  • Clients who need to gain strength after battling cancer.
  • Clients with osteoporosis or general deconditioning. Any age, any fitness level.
  • Clients who need “prehab” for an upcoming joint replacement surgery or other orthopedic surgery in the next 2-4 months.
  • Clients who have finished their rehab but wish to continue their exercise program at a facility already familiar to them.
  • Anyone who wants to get healthier.

How do I join? What is the process?

You come into Reaper Physical Therapy and request the MOG. A physical therapist performs an evaluation that assesses several items including (in no particular order) weight, strength, flexibility, balance, blood pressure, cardiovascular fitness. In short, we assess your general fitness level. When working with the therapist, your personal goals will be discussed, (“I don’t want to take so much medicine”, “I want to lose weight”, “I want to get ready for an Alaskan Cruise”, “I need to get ready for a knee replacement”). Based on that information, goals are established and an individualized exercise program is created. This program includes cardiovascular fitness, strengthening, flexibility, and balance. Periodic re-evaluations will be performed to measure your current progress against your baseline numbers.

The Importance of Regular Exercise

MSNBC Health published an article, which said “75% of the 2.1 trillion spent on healthcare was too preventable and treatable." The EPIC study they cited listed these facts about the 23,000 people in the study: Four behaviors were encouraged and changed:

  1. Not smoking
  2. Exercising 3.5 hours a week
  3. Eating a healthy diet
  4. Maintaining a healthy weight

The Results:

  • 93 % of diabetes
  • 81 % of heart attacks
  • 50 % of strokes
  • 36 % of all cancers

could be prevented.

Wow. Those numbers are incredible. In my extensive experience losing weight will help your knees and back, stopping smoking will help your back (in a roundabout way, smoking dries out the lungs, the lungs pull moisture from the vertebral disc, drying out the disc, causing thinning, and degenerative disc disease). Wearing good shoes will make your knees last longer, bifocals and computers don’t mix - it leads to neck problems. Enrolling at a gym, and going to it regularly, will help with stress, blood pressure cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, and balance. Oh, and it also burns calories.

We made a deliberate decision to not offer short term memberships at our MOG. We believe that exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and want to convince our membership that it requires a continued commitment and that short term memberships are a recipe for failure. We offer 6 month or one year memberships.
